Michael
Banahan
Live in the Piesting Valley
Recording information
On February 1st 2003 Michael played a sell out solo concert in Gasthof
DENK - 2770 Gutenstein, Klostertal 19 Niederösterreich, Austria,
for his friends in s`Neusiedler Ohrwaschl Folk Club. The concert was recorded
live for reference only, with one microphone for Michaels vocal
and a direct line into his guitar. The audience applause was not recorded.
Michael had not intended releasing a live record and there was no provision
made to repair or enhance the performance in the post production studio.
After listening to the tapes when he came home, it was felt that the feel
and emotion of the performance more than compensated for the lack of planning
a live record. This is a totally honest live recording from Michael Banahan.
Thanks to s`Neusiedler Ohrwaschl
Rig the Jig, the Irish Traditional Folk band I play with, performed a
concert in The Piesting Valley in Austria some years ago. This was my
first encounter with s`Neusiedler Ohrwaschl Folk Club. In the summer of
2002 we had a wonderful time together when the Folk Club decided to come
on a music and cultural trip to Ireland. I accompanied them and planned
their trip and I have to say that it was a pleasure for me to spend a
week with such fine people. We travelled all over the west of Ireland,
Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim. We had a day trip on the River
Shannon and visited the historical site, Clonmacnoise. After a visit to
Doolin in Co, Clare, we took the ferry to see Inisbofin Island off the
West Coast of Ireland. We went to see the historical site Newgrange Co,
Meath and a visit to Dublins fair City. Every night we had a session
of music. We visited places like Matt Molloys pub in Westport, OConnors
pub in Doolin, The Coleman Centre Gurteen Co, Sligo, Days bar on
Inisbofin Island. The Abbey hotel Roscommon, Murrys bar Charlestown,
The Moving Stairs pub Boyle Co, Roscommon to name but a few. We ate good
food and plenty of the black stuff. For me it was like I was travelling
with a group of people that I had known all my life. Our bus driver, Pat
Allan and I bid farewell to everyone at the airport in Dublin and I felt
sad to see my friends leave.
When Gerhard Teufell and the s`Neusiedler Ohrwaschl Folk Club invited
me back to play a solo concert in The piesting Valley, I was delighted.
On the 31st of January 2003 with my good friend Padraig Maloney, I returned
again. We were overcome with the friendship and hospitality that we were
greeted with. We arrived on our first night at the Farmers house and there
was food and drink there fit for kings. I met the Folk group and we played
some music together and this was a great experience for me. I also met
the sound engineer, Ewis Herger, and I must say he did an excellent job
at the concert and he was a pleasure to work with. Gerhard and Margaret
Teufell looked after us so well and took us sightseeing all over the Piesting
valley. Karl, the owner of the concert venue, Gasthof DENK and all the
staff were really nice to us and made us feel so welcome. This CD is a
recording of the concert that I performed there that weekend. Its
a time in my life I will never forget. To all the members of s`Neusiedler
Ohrwaschl I would like to say a sincere thank you and with Gods
help we will all meet again someday.
